![]() Stacy Allyn Baker Although Stacy was born in Boston in nineteen-eighty- something, she spent her formative years in the small college town of Durham, New Hampshire. Whether she sang before she could talk or whether it was the other way around is a standing debate, however it was at a very early age when the debate was settled on where her talent lay. Stacy was in 3rd grade when she won her first talent show. It was a televised show out of Boston, and she blew the competition out of the water. Like many artists, Stacy started in musical theatre. It wasn't until she was 18 or so that she realized that she only half loved musical theatre, the musical part. When she discovered that she could have one without the other, she jumped a plane home from the Musical Theatre program at Northwestern University in Chicago, and submitted her application to the Berklee School of Music in Boston. By that time, Stacy had been writing her own music for about 2 years, still a rookie, but passionate and dedicated to her craft. She knew that it would be at Berklee where she could further explore both her voice and her songwriting. Shortly after starting school and moving to Boston, Stacy visited the Encore Lounge, an upscale piano bar she had heard about through some friends. One night she decided to step up to the open mic and she soon became friends with the performers. After a few months of weekly visits to the Encore, the owner, after hearing her perform, offered Stacy a one-night audition. At the end of her set the following week, he put a $50 in her tip jar and told her Saturday nights were hers. Stacy still plays at the Encore Lounge, part of Boston's Roxyplex, and has since moved to Wednesday nights. She has also been heard at a number of venues in and around Boston, including Emily’s, the All Asia, The Matrix, and a recent fundraising gala at the Harvard Club. In September after a performance of Hershey Felder's one man show "Gershwin Alone," at the American Repertory Theatre in Cambridge, the audience was invited to sing along to some old Gershwin favorites. Mr. Felder easily picked Stacy's voice out of the crowd, and after coaxing her up onstage, Stacy wowed the audience with a spectacular performance of "Someone to Watch Over Me." When Barry Manilow reviewed a recent demo CD, his comment was that Stacy was the "Real Deal." He compared her to "one of [his] all time favorites, Laura Nyro." Stacy has a wonderfully unique vocal quality, and a deep sultry color to her voice. She is also an amazingly talented songwriter; her music comes alive and transports the listener. Stacy’s music is being sung and recorded by artists around the country and she is currently working on her first breakthrough CD. |
